Biotechnology
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Bioengineering: Biotechnology prepares students for a variety of careers in the biotechnology industry and for further education in graduate school. The curriculum has a strong engineering foundation with emphasis on biochemical process applications. It addresses the bioengineering topics of biochemistry and metabolism, kinetics, biotransport, biosystems, bioreactors, bioseparations, tissue engineering, and the complementary field of cellular physiology. Education in these areas allows application of bioengineering and physicochemical principles to cellular and molecular biology, with the consequent development of molecules, cells, and tissues that benefit human health.
Process for "Continuing" Students to Apply to "Impacted" Major in Bioengineering: Biotechnology
Freshman students who entered UCSD in fall 2010 will become "continuing" students in fall 2011. In fall 2011, such students may apply to the "impacted" Bioengineering: Biotechnology major, though there may only be ten "open" slots available. Interested "continuing" students must not be past "sophomore" standing (based on courses completed, not units), as time to graduation would be delayed. Applications will be available Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 from the Bioengineering Student Affairs Office, Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall, room 141 on the Warren campus. Students are required to have completed the following nine (9) courses prior to applying: BILD 1; CHEM 6AB; MAE 9; MATH 20ABC; Physics 2AB, and applications must be submitted to Bioengineering Student Affairs by the end of the first week of instruction: Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.
Continuing students' applications will be ranked according to the GPA obtained in the 9 required courses, and admission to the impacted Bioengineering: Biotechnology major will be approved, beginning with the student having the highest GPA in the 9 required courses, until the 10 "open" slots are filled. Bioengineering Student Affairs staff will notify students who are successful in transitioning into the impacted major to "officially" declare the Bioengineering: Biotechnology major online via the Major/Minor link under Tools at http://tritonlink.ucsd.edu.
